The life
1699–1740
Peter Gordon was a London upholsterer who sailed on the Anne with the first colonists of Georgia in 1733, and the Trustees made him the colony’s first bailiff, one of its three judges. He kept a journal of the colony’s first years and went back to England without leave. The engraved View of Savannah as it stood the 29th of March 1734 is dedicated to the Trustees over his name, though historians now think he did not draw it himself. That view, engraved by Pierre Fourdrinier, is inside our card, The Savannah River.
