The life
1698–1758Born Groningen, the Netherlands
Paul Fourdrinier was born in Groningen to Huguenot refugees from Dieppe, trained for six years under the engraver Bernard Picart in Amsterdam, and came to England in 1720. In London he engraved portraits, book illustrations and architectural plates, signing them “P. Fourdrinier”, which later led writers to invent a separate Peter Fourdrinier. His great-granddaughter was the mother of Cardinal John Henry Newman. Our card, The Savannah River, has inside the view of the young city that he engraved after Peter Gordon’s drawing of 1734.
