The life
1890–1984Born Krasnaya Polyana, near Kharkiv, Ukraine
Mariia Siniakova was one of five sisters whose family home near Kharkiv became a meeting place for the Futurist poets; Velimir Khlebnikov wrote poems to her. She painted, and from the mid-1920s illustrated children’s books, many for the poet Nikolai Aseev, who married her sister Ksenia. She lived in Moscow until her death. Our card, Zebra, is her cover for Animals at Liberty, a book of verse by Pyotr Neznamov published in 1927.
