The life
about 1636–1684Born Rotterdam, Netherlands
Gerrit Battem was born and died in Rotterdam, the son of a painter, and as a young man travelled along the Rhine with the painter Abraham Furnerius. He painted mountain landscapes, winter scenes and town views, and his coloured drawings were sought after by collectors of his day. Our card, View of Groningen, is one of his gouaches, with a pink evening sky over the city’s towers.
