Gaspard-Joseph Chaussegros de Léry was baptised in Toulon, trained as a military engineer and fought in the War of the Spanish Succession before he was sent to Quebec in 1716 to plan its defences. He was chief engineer of New France from 1719 until his death, designing fortifications, churches and public buildings, and Canada now honours him as a person of national historic importance.
