The life
1861-1933Born Sacramento, California, USA
Edward Winsor Kemble was the son of a California newspaper publisher. Apart from classes at the Art Students League of New York he had little formal training, but he was selling drawings to magazines by 1881. His cartoons in the new humor magazine Life caught Mark Twain's attention, and Twain hired him, then 23, to illustrate Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884). His pen drawings gave Huck, Jim and the river their first pictures. He went on to a long career as a political cartoonist for Collier's and Harper's Weekly. Many of his later drawings were caricatures of African Americans that are now recognized as racist. Picturepops cards use his drawings for Huckleberry Finn.
