The life
1884-1934Born Montpellier, France
Charles Martin was a French illustrator and designer, born in Montpellier. He began in humorous magazines such as Le Rire and, from about 1912, drew for the Gazette du Bon Ton and other Paris fashion magazines, and later for Harper's Bazar and Vanity Fair. His clean, precise line shows the influence of Cubism. He also designed posters, perfume bottles, furniture and wallpaper. In the First World War he served in the infantry and the engineers, and published drawings from the front in Sous les pots de fleurs (1917). His best-known book is Sports et divertissements, made with the composer Erik Satie, drawn in 1914 and published in 1923. He illustrated about twenty books and died in Paris in 1934. Picturepops cards use his Gazette du Bon Ton plates of 1924.
