The life

1884-1933Born Mistelbach, Lower Austria (then Austria-Hungary)

Bernd (Bernhard) Steiner was born in Mistelbach, Lower Austria, the son of a cabinetmaker who was the town's mayor. He worked in northern Germany as a painter and stage designer; in 1914 he made the poster for the international art exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bremen. Badly wounded in the right arm in the First World War, he learned to draw with his left hand. In Vienna he ran his own advertising studio and made posters for balls, films and brands; in 1920 he also drew an antisemitic election poster for the Christian Social Party. From 1926 he designed posters and ship interiors for Norddeutscher Lloyd. He returned, ill, to Vienna around 1930 and died there in 1933. Picturepops cards use one of his Norddeutscher Lloyd posters (1928).
