The life
1840–about 1899Born Germany
Augustus Koch was born in Germany in 1840 and grew up in Wisconsin. In the Civil War he served as an engineering officer with a Black regiment on the lower Mississippi, where he first made maps. Afterwards, working mostly from Kansas City, he became one of the most travelled panoramic artists of his day, drawing over a hundred towns and cities in twenty-three states. Our cards Downtown Atlanta, Bird’s-Eye View and Galveston Harbor are his own views, and his work also appears in Early Morning on the San Antonio River, Seattle, Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and Norfolk Harbor.
