The life
1887–1914Born Meschede, Germany
August Macke belonged to the Blue Rider circle, though he lived mostly in Bonn, and he loved bright, clear colour. In 1914 he travelled to Tunisia with Paul Klee and painted some of his most luminous watercolours there. He was killed in the first weeks of the First World War, aged 27. Our cards, among them Hat Shop and Flowers in the Garden, show the everyday happiness he liked to paint.
