The life
1907–1993Born Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Arthur Staal was the son of the architect Jan Frederik Staal and trained in Haarlem, Utrecht and Amsterdam, starting his own career in 1930. An early champion of the Nieuwe Bouwen, the Dutch modern movement, he won the Prix de Rome for architecture in 1935 and went on to design offices, schools and post-war rebuilding across the Netherlands, including the Shell tower on the IJ in Amsterdam (1971). Our card, Wendingen, Red and Grid, comes from the cover he designed for the art magazine Wendingen in 1930, the year he set out as an architect.
